About this list
A Viennese chess club is a registered association, a Verein, and almost all of the clubs here belong to the Wiener Schachverband, the federation of the province of Vienna. Its club championship, the Wiener Vereinsmeisterschaft, runs from the Landesliga down through several classes from autumn to April, and many clubs field teams in more than one class. A second competition, the works league, brings company and institution teams to the board on Wednesday evenings.
Outside league rounds a club meets on its own weekday, and in Vienna that often means a coffee house: tschaturanga at Café Merkur, Schachklub Austria Wien at Café Frey, Schachklub Hernals at Café Kreuzberg, Schachzentrum Favoriten at Café Anningerblick. Others use pensioners' clubs, a technical college in Ottakring or a sports ground in Kagran. Several clubs give the federation house at Spielmannplatz in Leopoldstadt as their playing venue, so the district on their tile is that of the federation house, not the one in the club's name. Clubs in Klosterneuburg, Mödling, Baden, Bad Vöslau and Bisamberg complete the list.
