Chess tournaments in Vienna: championships, opens and series 21

The Viennese tournament year rests on the Wiener Schachverband. Its state championship starts each September, and the federation adds a rapid championship in late November, an open championship for seniors in February and a blitz rally in autumn; on Epiphany the Dreikönigsturnier is played as a team blitz event. The federation's leagues, the Wiener Vereinsmeisterschaft for clubs, the Betriebsmeisterschaft for works teams and the Wiener Schülerliga for schools, are not on this list: they sit with the places to play.

Clubs and universities run the rest. Schachklub Austria Wien holds the Austria Open every spring as a memorial tournament, tschaturanga plays its cups three or four times a year and an open in summer, the TU Wien chess festival and the WU series bring students to the board, and there is an Advent Open in December. Bad Vöslau, south of the city, hosts a summer blitz open and rapid tournaments of its own.
